However, the airport is causing today because of its specific location in the vicinity of a lot of habitationSevere noise nuisance and sleep disturbance. Flanders stands for the important challenge to find a good balance between this economic importance of an international airport on the one hand and the quality of living environment around this airport on the other. As provided for in the environmental permitThe 'Balanced Approach' will be rolled out of March 29, 2024 for Brussels National airport. This procedure is based on the European Regulation (EU) 598/2014 and includes a careful assessment of the most cost -effective combination of measures within four pillars of noise control: •Measures at the source of the noise; • Measures in spatial planning; • procedural measures; • Exploitation restrictions. The aim is to support a balance between the economic importance of the airport and the quality of life around the airport. The EU Regulationforesees that operating restrictions may only be applied after the other measures of the balanced approach have been taken into consideration.
