Description:
The masonry 19th century ice cellar and underground tunnel are protected as a monument as an expansion of the Lusthof Emmaus castle. The cellars and underground tunnel are located on the Hoveniersberg in Ghent, between Sint - Pietersnieuwstraat and the Muinkschelde, under the green strip. The protected heritage is in the hands of two owners. This file only concerns the part owned by Ghent University, namely the remains of the vultemen cellars on the waterfront and part of the underground tunnel. The other part of the tunnel and the two cylindrical ice cellars are private ownership and are not part of this file. The file aims at a maximum conservation and is limited to the necessary interventions with a view to custody. The tunnel will only be restored to the plot boundary. You will be able to look in the restored tunnel via a fixed stained glass window. The tunnel itself will be closed through an open fence, with a lockable gate in it, so that maintenance work and future inspections always remain guaranteed.
