Description:
Situation sketch: The swing bridge at the Visartsluis in Zeebrugge, located at the lock head on the sea side, has been an important link in the accessibility of the port area for decades. The bridge, built in the early 1950s as a reconstruction during the war-damaged infrastructure, was originally designed for light and limited traffic. Today, however, it is used intensively by heavy port traffic and tram traffic, which frequently crosses the bridge, especially in the summer. This makes the bridge satisfactory no longer meets the requirements of a modern and safe traffic infrastructure. The construction of the bridge deck is very outdated. Current use causes deformations in the structure, with cracks, loose parts and frequent defects bridge deck as a result. For this reason, the existing swing bridge will be replaced by a fixed bridge at the same location. The new bridge will be sober and maintenance-friendly, with two spans of approximately twenty meters, with simplicity, robustness and... sustainability is central.
