Description:
In order to prevent the victim of a bicycle theft on the street from having to pass through the 19 municipal depots to have a chance of finding it if it had been abandoned in the street, a regional depot for found bicycles was created in 2012. To achieve the creation of this central depot for found bicycles, It was necessary to have the municipalities sign an agreement in which the Region agrees to take charge of the municipalities' obligations in terms of management of found objects (registration, conservation for 3 months, search for the owner). After 3 months, the bikes become the property of the Region. It repairs reusable bicycles and returns them to municipalities, CPAS, non-profit organizations, schools, etc. Currently, 15 Brussels municipalities have signed this agreement and are collaborating with the central repository for found bicycles. The Region is therefore committed without time limit to ensuring this public service mission. This public service mission is also included in the Regional Mobility Plan. More specifically, sheet C3 plans to strengthen the services allowing you to find a stolen bicycle. The Action plan against bicycle theft that the Region adopted in September 2021 also provides as a measure to continue the deposit of found bicycles, to remove abandoned bicycles and wrecks and to recycle and recondition abandoned bicycles for social action via the deposit.
