'Clutch areas' are 'coupling areas' in the port. Clutch areas are transition zones between the villages and the port industry. In addition to buffers, clutch areas are zones where residents, employees and visitors can relax and cycle in a safe way to work. They are young green Islands in a highly urbanized and industrialized neighborhood. For local residents they create a pleasant and safe added value. The Ghent canal zone project is a partnership between the municipalities of Zelzate and Evergem, the city of Ghent, the Flemish Region, North Sea Port and the province of East Flanders. The cooperation is to better coordinate plans and projects of these partners within the area of the Ghent Channel Zone.
