Description:
Since the start of national mosquito surveillance and monitoring in 2022, an increasing spread of tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus) in Flanders has been reported annually. Local control keeps populations under control, but is not successful in order to completely eradicate those tiger mosquito populations, the dense buildings in Flanders make us extra vulnerable to invasion by the tiger mosquito. At the same time, we have seen an increase in outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases worldwide in recent years. Travel to endemic areas causes an increase in the number of imported disease cases in Belgium and Flanders. Because the tiger mosquito established itself locally in Flanders, this can lead to autochthonous transmission of previously tropical diseases. This is a worrying development for which we in Flanders can better prepare. After all, the risk of local transmission of these mosquito diseases depends on future heat periods, the investment in, and efficiency of, surveillance, monitoring and control. This government contract specifically focuses on: • Developing scenarios, clear procedures and practical tools for local interventions with regard to the prevention of disease transmission by the tiger mosquito in imported cases and native cases. • Drawing up a risk mapping (both in time and space) based on scientifically supported risk factors, which reduce the risk of local dense tiger mosquitoes...
